Extremely Lightweight Powders

The Dynatrol® GSS Level Detector is designed for high, intermediate, or low-point level detection of bulk solids. It is constructed to handle extremely lightweight applications that are difficult to measure or detect. The CL-10GSS is versatile enough to operate successfully with consistent results on difficult product like fine, low density powders and materials as light as 1/2 lb. per cubic foot.

The Dynatrol® GSS Level Detector is designed for application to either high, intermediate, or low-point level detection of bulk solids. It is constructed to handle extremely lightweight applications that are difficult to measure or detect a reading. It is versatile enough to operate successfully with consistent results on difficult product applications such as fine, low density powders and materials as light as 1/2 lb. per cubic foot.

Pharmaceutical

Dynatrol® instruments are used for a variety of applications in the Pharmaceutical industry including:

  • point Level Detection of capsules or powdered coatings of tablets
  • determining the Viscosity of coatings, creams and ointments
  • evaluating the Density of hydrogen peroxide, oil mixtures, and other liquids or slurries.

Bulk Solids Level Detection

The Dynatrol® CL10-DJ series of level switches are used for level detection of dry ingredients in bins, hoppers or feeders. Typical applications for both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical processes include:

  • Tablets
  • Hard and Soft Gelatin Capsules
  • Powdered Materials for Coating Beads and Tablets
  • Fillers and other substances that vary widely in bulk density or particle size.

Viscosity Measurement

Ammonium Hydroxide

Dynatrol® Density Measurement Systems are used extensively for measurement and control of density, specific gravity, or percent concentration with Ammonia solution, also known as ammonium hydroxide, ammonia water, ammonical liquor, ammonia liquor, aqua ammonia, aqueous ammonia, or simply ammonia.

  • Eliminate multiple hand sampling when mixing
  • Real time percent concentration measurements of ammonium hydroxide with no effects from pressure changes or pipe vibration
  • Virtually no maintenance costs

Automation Products, Inc. was approached by a chemical company to devise a solution for online measurement of an ammonia solution. The process is describer below.

Issue

The chemical company needed online measurements while mixing anhydrous ammonia with water. Their pressurized ammonia was bubbled into a mixing tank with ultra pure water, and a sample stream was constantly pumped from the bottom of the tank to give a real time reading of percent concentration for aqueous ammonia.

Resolution

The chemical company chose a Dynatrol® Density System to solve their problem. The Dynatrol® Density Meter has the Temperature vs. Density vs. Percent concentration curves programmed into the Series 2000 Digital Density Converter. The density meter provides 4-20 mA signals to the chemical company’s control room for percent concentration and temperature of the ammonia and water solution. Since the Dynatrol® Density Meter outputs percent concentration, there was no need to program a complicated set of algorithms into the DCS control system to calculate percent concentration from density.

After months of comparing hand sample measurements to the measurements of the Dynatrol® Density Meter, the company found that the Dynatrol® Density Meter correlated directly to the hand measurements. The company now uses the Dynatrol® Density System in the control of the mixing process. This eliminates the bi-hourly hand sampling that technicians would have to perform.

Ethylene Glycol

The Dynatrol® CL-10HY Density Cell and Series 2000 Digital Density Converter can measure the temperature and density of an ethylene glycol process stream. Applications may include antifreeze and deicing fluid, also for use in manufacturing of resins and polyester fibers in the plastics industry, as well as removing water vapor during natural gas production.

How it works: The Series 2000 Digital Density Converter processes basic information from the Density Cell to calculate density at a reference temperature. The process value can be used to calculate the specific gravity, Baumé and percent concentration. This information is made available to the operator or process engineer.

The standard Series 2000 has an analog output corresponding to either of these process variables. Optionally, it can be programmed to have two analog outputs that can be calibrated for any two process variables. (Density, Temperature, Baumé, Specific Gravity, Percent Concentration)
